If your dog is constantly scratching, licking their paws, chewing their feet or rubbing against the furniture, you are not alone. Itchy skin is one of the most common and frustrating health concerns experienced by dogs.
You may also notice red skin, a musty smell, greasy fur, darkened skin, irritated paws, recurring ear problems or moist areas commonly described as hot spots. These signs can have several different causes, so it is important to look beyond the itch and work out what is triggering it.
As a Small Animal Naturopath, I created our Skin Soothing Spray for Dogs to provide easy, targeted topical support for itchy paws, red skin, yeast-prone areas, skin folds, minor irritation and uncomfortable-looking skin.

Why is my dog so itchy all the time?
Dogs scratch for many different reasons. While allergies and yeast are common possibilities, they are not the only causes.
Ongoing itching in dogs may be associated with:
- Environmental allergies to grass, pollen, dust or mould
- Food sensitivities
- Yeast overgrowth on the skin
- Bacterial skin infections
- Fleas, mites or other parasites
- Moisture trapped between the paws or inside skin folds
- Dry, damaged or irritated skin
- Contact with garden or household chemicals
- Hormonal or immune-related health conditions
- Repeated licking and scratching that further damages the skin barrier
A topical dog skin spray can provide soothing support, but recurring itchiness usually requires the underlying trigger to be identified as well.
How can I tell if my dog has yeast on their skin?
Malassezia yeast normally lives on canine skin in small numbers. Problems can develop when changes in the skin environment allow the yeast population to increase.
Common signs associated with yeast-prone skin in dogs include:
- Constant paw licking or chewing
- A musty, sour or “corn chip” smell
- Red or inflamed-looking skin
- Greasy, oily or flaky skin
- Darkened or thickened skin
- Hair loss around irritated areas
- Brown staining around the paws
- Irritated skin folds
- Recurring ear irritation
- Scratching that becomes worse in warm or humid weather
These signs are not exclusive to yeast. Allergies, bacteria and parasites can look very similar. A veterinarian can examine a skin sample under a microscope to determine whether yeast or bacteria are present.
What causes yeast-prone skin in dogs?
Yeast thrives in warm and moist areas, which is why the paws, armpits, groin, ears and skin folds are frequently affected. However, moisture alone is not always the underlying problem.
Many dogs with recurring yeast also have an underlying allergy or a weakened skin barrier. When the skin becomes irritated, dogs lick and scratch. This introduces more moisture and creates further damage, allowing yeast and bacteria to become part of an ongoing cycle.
Long-term management therefore needs to consider the dog’s allergies, food, gut health, skin barrier, environment and general wellbeing—not only what is visible on the skin.
Does Skin Soothing Spray kill yeast on dogs?
Our Skin Soothing Spray contains ingredients selected to help maintain a clean and balanced skin surface, including Horopito and colloidal silver. These ingredients have been investigated for their antimicrobial or antifungal properties, although the strength of the evidence varies between ingredients and formulations.
Horopito contains a naturally occurring compound called polygodial. Laboratory studies have found that polygodial can inhibit several species of yeast, particularly Candida. Silver-based topical products have also been investigated for canine Malassezia, with a small pilot study reporting encouraging results from a silver nanoparticle shampoo.
However, those studies were not performed on this finished spray, and research involving Candida cannot automatically be applied to canine Malassezia. For this reason, the most accurate description is that the spray helps maintain healthy microbial balance and a clean skin environment rather than claiming that it cures or eliminates a diagnosed yeast infection.
If your dog has a severe or confirmed yeast infection, seek veterinary advice about appropriate treatment.
What is in Skin Soothing Spray for Dogs?
Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver is included to support skin hygiene and help maintain a clean skin surface. Silver particles and silver-based preparations have been investigated for their effects on microorganisms, although results vary considerably according to the particle size, concentration and formulation used.
A small pilot study involving a different 0.003% silver nanoparticle shampoo reported a reduction in Malassezia in dogs.
Within Skin Soothing Spray, colloidal silver forms part of a broader herbal formula designed to support the skins microbial balance and irritated-looking skin.
Calendula – Calendula officinalis
Calendula is one of the best-known traditional herbs for sensitive, irritated and damaged skin. Its flowers contain flavonoids, carotenoids and triterpenes that have been investigated for their skin-supportive properties.
Laboratory research involving skin cells suggests that calendula extracts may influence inflammatory processes, collagen activity and normal tissue repair.
Calendula is included in our spray to help soothe irritated skin and support the skin’s natural recovery and barrier function.
Chickweed – Stellaria media
Chickweed has a long history of topical use for itchy, hot, dry and irritated skin. Herbalists traditionally value it as a cooling and soothing herb, particularly where the urge to scratch or lick is making the skin more uncomfortable.
Chickweed contains plant compounds including flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponins and antioxidants. Laboratory research has investigated its antioxidant and inflammation-modulating activity.
We include chickweed primarily for its traditional role in calming itchy, sensitive skin and supporting skin comfort.
St John’s Wort – Hypericum perforatum
Although St John’s Wort is often associated with mood support, it also has a long history of topical use for minor skin irritation, superficial wounds and sensitive tissue.
Its naturally occurring constituents include hyperforin and hypericin. Laboratory and preliminary clinical research has investigated topical St John’s Wort for its antioxidant, antimicrobial and skin-repair properties. Some human studies have reported improvements in wound recovery.
In this formula, St John’s Wort helps support skin comfort and the normal recovery of irritated-looking skin.
Horopito – Pseudowintera colorata
Horopito is a distinctive New Zealand herb with a history of use in traditional Māori herbal practice. It contains polygodial, a compound that has demonstrated antifungal activity in laboratory studies.
Research has found that isolated polygodial can affect the cell membranes and normal function of several yeast species. Much of this research has involved Candida rather than the Malassezia yeast commonly associated with dog skin.
Horopito has been included to help support a healthy microbial environment on areas prone to moisture, odour, paw licking and recurring skin imbalance.
Lavender – Lavandula officinalis
Lavender has traditionally been applied to minor skin irritations and is valued for its gentle skin-soothing properties.
Research on lavender preparations, particularly lavender essential oil, has investigated antimicrobial activity and normal wound-repair processes. Animal and laboratory studies have reported effects on collagen formation, tissue remodelling and microbial growth. These findings are preparation-specific and cannot automatically be applied to every lavender extract.
Lavender is included in our formula to complement the soothing herbs and support comfortable, healthy-looking skin.
Aloe Vera – Aloe barbadensis
Aloe vera is widely used to cool, hydrate and soothe dry or irritated skin. Its gel contains polysaccharides and other compounds that help retain moisture and support the skin’s natural barrier.
Topical aloe vera has been studied in several human clinical trials. Some studies have reported improved recovery in superficial wounds and skin-graft donor sites, although results vary according to the product and type of skin injury.
In Skin Soothing Spray, aloe vera provides cooling hydration and helps make the formula comfortable to apply to hot, dry or itchy areas.
Zinc
Zinc is an essential mineral involved in healthy skin cell turnover, protein synthesis, immune function and normal tissue repair. Topically applied zinc is also commonly used to help form a protective layer over sensitive skin.
Zinc is included to support the skin barrier, help protect irritated areas from environmental exposure and maintain normal moisture balance.
Can I use Skin Soothing Spray on my dog’s itchy paws?
Yes. The spray can be applied externally to itchy paws and between the toes, provided the skin does not have a deep wound or severe infection.
Gently remove surface dirt and dry the paws before applying. Spray the affected area and allow it to dry. Distracting your dog with a meal, walk or gentle activity after application may help prevent immediate licking.
Persistent paw licking is often associated with allergies, yeast, moisture, contact irritation or pain. If your dog continues to chew their paws despite topical care, investigate the underlying cause with your veterinarian.
Can I use it for dog hot spots?
Skin Soothing Spray can provide topical support for small areas of mild, irritated-looking skin. Its cooling, hydrating and skin-supportive ingredients may help soothe the surrounding skin while you monitor the area.
However, a true hot spot—also known as acute moist or pyotraumatic dermatitis—can become large, painful and infected very quickly. Veterinary treatment may involve clipping the fur, thoroughly cleaning the area and addressing bacteria, inflammation, parasites or the underlying allergy.
Seek veterinary attention if the hot spot is wet, weeping, painful, foul-smelling, rapidly spreading or causing significant distress.
Can the spray be used on my dog’s ears?
It can be applied carefully to irritated-looking skin on the outer ear flap, but it should not be sprayed directly into the ear canal.
Head shaking, ear odour, dark discharge, redness inside the canal or pain can indicate an ear infection. These symptoms need veterinary assessment because topical skin spray cannot reach or safely treat problems deeper inside the ear.
How often should I apply Skin Soothing Spray?
Shake the bottle well before use. Spray the affected or irritated area up to five times per day, or as directed on the product label.
For best results:
- Apply to clean, dry skin where possible
- Part the coat so the spray reaches the skin
- Allow the area to dry before your dog licks it
- Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth
- Do not spray directly into the ear canal
- Do not apply to deep, heavily bleeding or severely infected wounds
Each 100ml bottle provides approximately 1,000 sprays, making it practical for regular targeted application.
How quickly will an itchy dog spray work?
Some dogs may appear more comfortable soon after a cooling topical spray is applied, while damaged or persistently irritated skin can take longer to settle.
The response depends on the cause and severity of the problem. A topical product cannot remove an environmental allergen, food trigger, parasite or underlying medical condition. If your dog is not improving, or the skin is becoming worse, make a vet appointment.
Can Skin Soothing Spray be used with other medications?
Because it is a topical product, it may be suitable for use as part of a broader skin-care plan. However, avoid assuming that every natural topical product is automatically compatible with every medication or medicated skin treatment.
If your dog is using a veterinary cream, medicated shampoo, antifungal treatment, steroid preparation or wound dressing, ask your veterinarian how to space the products and whether they should be applied to the same area.
Is Skin Soothing Spray suitable for cats?
No. This product is labelled for dogs only. Do not apply it to cats.
Why does my dog’s itchy skin keep coming back?
Topical support helps address what is happening on the skin, but recurring skin problems often involve an underlying trigger.
Long-term support may need to include:
- Identifying environmental or food sensitivities
- Veterinary testing for yeast, bacteria or parasites
- Supporting digestion and the gut microbiome
- Drying paws and skin folds after bathing or swimming
- Avoiding strongly fragranced cleaning and grooming products
- Supporting normal immune and skin-barrier function
- Preventing ongoing licking, scratching and self-trauma

Arrange veterinary care if your dog has:
- Severe or constant itching
- Broken, bleeding, weeping or infected-looking skin
- A hot spot that is painful or rapidly spreading
- Pus, swelling or a strong unpleasant odour
- Recurring ear irritation or discharge
- Large areas of hair loss or darkened skin
- Lethargy, fever or reduced appetite
- Skin symptoms that repeatedly return
Itchy skin is not a diagnosis. Finding the cause is the most important step towards achieving lasting improvement.
